2 With the death of President Paul von Hindenburg, Chancellor Adolf Hitler assumes the office of Reich President. The Wehrmacht oath of allegiance is changed.
19 Adolf Hitler combines the offices of President and Chancellor and assumes the title of Führer.
1935    
Mar    
16 Adolf Hitler denounces the disarmament clauses of the Treaty of Versailles. He also announces the existence of the Luftwaffe, which directly infringes upon the Treaty of Versailles.
  Heeresneubauarbeiterlager (Construction Workers Camp) established. Camp of 30 + 18 Barracks constructed to house 3000 German and Polish workers building the Bergen military training area and Bergen-Belsen (now Bergen-Hohne) barracks. The camp is referred to as the 'Waldlager' (Forest Camp).

1936

7 Adolf Hitler denounces the Rhineland provisions of Treaty of Versailles and Locarno Treaty. Wehrmacht re-occupies the Rhineland.

29 The Munich Agreement is signed, allowing Germany to annex the Sudetenland portion of Czechoslovakia, by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, French Premier Édouard Daladier, Italian leader Benito Mussolini, and Adolf Hitler.

1 Germany annexes Sudetenland.
Nov  
9 Kristallnacht.
  Waldlager used as a material store and armoury until 1940. Population reported as 259 construction workers.
1939    
Mar    
15/16 Germany invades the remainder of Czechoslovakia.
21 Adolf Hitler demands that Poland return Danzig and the Polish Corridor.
Apr    
6 Britain and Poland sign a mutual-assistance pact.
28 Adolf Hitler, once more, demands that Poland return Danzig and the Polish Corridor.
May    
17 Reported inhabitants as 139 men and 1 woman in the Waldlager.
Aug    
27 Britain and France attempt to persuade Poland to negotiate with Germany.
Sep    
1 Germany invades Poland.
Britain and France, instead of immediately declaring war against Germany look to Mussolini who had proposed an international conference to revise the terms of Treaty of Versailles.
2 Adolf Hitler indicates to the Britain and France that he would withdraw from Poland provided that he was allowed to retain Danzig and the Polish Corridor.
3 UK, France, Australia and New Zealand declare war.
17 Soviet Union invades Poland from the East.
