Sgt. John Chitham

Portrait of John Chitham, aged 91, who served as a sergeant with the Britsh Army Film and Photographic Unit in Holland and Germany from December 1944 until the end of the Second World War. Former Sergeant Chitham was a film cameraman and photographer whose wartime work is now preserved by the Imperial War Museum. Amongst other subjects, he witnessed and recorded the Allied crossing of the River Rhein, relief work in Bergen Belsen concentration camp, the liberation of prisoners at Stalag 387, Fallingbostel and the start of work to repatriate Russian prisoners to the Soviet Union.
