Sgt. George Henry Marsh

Extract from the personal diary of Sgt G.H. Marsh:-

Wednesday 18 April 1945: Left for Belsen Con Camp at 1300 arrived just outside at 2300.
Thursday 19 April: Other Batteries went to do duties at Camp. Reports of state of inmates terrible.
Friday 20 April: Expecting to have to supervise burials at Camp. E/A [Enemy Aircraft] came straffing at dawn. Started to rain heavily at night.
Saturday 21 April: On Guard at R.H.Q. Went hunting a sniper, no luck.
Sunday 22 April: Came off guard. Visited No. 1 Camp at Belsen. Sights horrible. The suffering of the inmates is beyond belief.
Monday 23 April: Went on wiring party at No. 2 Camp, wiring in a section for Typhus cases.
Tuesday 24 April: Wiring again.
Wednesday 25 April: Wiring again. Did a spot of motorcycling.
Thursday 26 April: Put finishing touches to mess including electric iron. Moving to fresh billets. On guard over S.S. at Belsen.
Friday 27 April: Moved billets in No. 3 Camp. Better mess than last. Really comfortable.
Saturday 28 April: In charge of cookhouse, feeding 2000 people. Full time job.
Sunday 29 April: Weather changed, a lot colder. Very tired, putting in a lot of hours.
Monday 30 April: Same job. More people continually arriving.
Tuesday 1 May: Colder still today. Mix up with rations and inoculations.
Wednesday 2 May: Another cool day and a busy one.
Thursday 3 May: Cleaned and took over a new cookhouse.
Friday 4 May: Now feeding 1500 at new cookhouse. Cleaning another cookhouse ready for another 1500 to 2000. In a few days shall be ready.
Saturday 5 May: Terrible weather. Water off in camp again. Now controlling 3 cookhouses feeding nearly 5000 people.
