Won a scholarship to Magdalen College Oxford from Charterhouse and then joined A. C. Neilsen in Oxford.
Went on to Renold in Manchester before joining the management consultants Urwick, Orr and Partners in London. As a medical student he helped at Belsen at the end of the War before spending four years as a junior ophthalmic surgeon in the army.
